Inspired by an exhibition of Victorian death masks of executed criminals used in 19th century pseudo sciences to read the characters of the felons, I decided to make work involving birth masks. Using doll’s faces I made moulds to create small porcelain masks.
Mixing the 20th century nature v nurture debate with Victorian fairground freak shows I created an installation containing a burlesque/fairground medical specimen cabinet where the potential hero/villain babies live....
This is the first of a series of cabinets exploring the concept of identity.
